BERESFORD CARVED STONE in St Edmund's church at Fenny Bentley

An old carved stone is hung on the wall in St Edmund's church along with the many other Beresford memorial plaques.

The shield is surmounted by a helmet from which the crest has been broken. Two authorities have independently dated it as being from 1680 to 1690. The stone is said to have been found lying about in Bentley Hall in the middle of the nineteenth century and bought at an auction by the tenant of the Old Hall (Cherry Orchard Farm) and given to the church. It is supposed to have surmounted the door, or perhaps the mantelpiece, of the Old Hall
