Bakewell Church sundial

Bakewell Church sundial Bakewell Church sundial
There is a badly eroded round sundial on the wall above and to the right of the porch doorway of All Saints Church, Bakewell.
Large areas of the dial face have crumbled away but faint Roman numerals can be seen. The date above the gnomon cannot be made out but is MDCCXCIII. According to an article in the Derbyshire Advertiser Notes and Queries of 1935, the dial once bore an inscription which read "In such an hour the Son of Man cometh" and the date 1793.
This quotation has completly gone, but was probably above the date. The small gnomon, possibly made of brass, is covered in green verdigris.
White Watson designed the sundial in 1793.
