A sundial dated 1758 is on the front wall of Hill Cottage at Ashover - it appears to be in incredibly good condition so is it a replica or been restored? HILL COTTAGE in Ashover was built in 1703 by William Hodgkinson of Overton Hall as a free school for the young inhabitants of Ashover.
Despite being described as a 'free school', pupils paid a weekly fee of 3d. and provided their own slate and books. Homework invariably consisted of twelve or eighteen words to be memorized with spelling and meaning.
